The program

The One Car Challenge.

LA Metro's One Car Challenge pays participating households a weekly reward for keeping their vehicle's mileage below a defined threshold. Carma verifies the miles each week through the connected-car API or an AI-reviewed odometer photo, calculates eligibility, and settles the reward to a virtual card the participant can use immediately.

Step 1
Enroll
Eligible households link their vehicle's telematics through the GoCarma app — no hardware to install.
Step 2
Verify
Mileage is measured each week from the verified odometer reading. Privacy-by-design — only the delta is reported.
Step 3
Reward
If the household stays under the weekly mileage cap, a reward is issued to a virtual card via the wallet.
Step 4
Repeat
The cycle runs weekly. Participants see progress in-app, build streaks, and stack rewards over time.
Why this matters

Mode shift, priced.

U.S. metros have spent decades adding lanes, building rail, and writing TDM plans to reduce drive-alone trips. The One Car Challenge is the first program to put a clear, weekly dollar price on not driving — verified by phone, paid the same day, no paperwork. That's the policy lever transportation planners have been asking for.

How it works

Three steps. Every week.

01
Measure.
The vehicle's odometer is read each week through the connected-car API, or verified from a photo of the dash by an AI check. Only the week-over-week delta is reported.
02
Qualify.
If total miles fall under the weekly cap, the household qualifies. The check runs automatically; no driver action needed.
03
Reward.
A virtual card is issued through the wallet. Spend it anywhere — groceries, gas, transit, savings.
The partner

LA Metro.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority — operator of the largest transit system on the U.S. West Coast and the lead transportation authority for a county of nearly 10 million people. The One Car Challenge is the most ambitious mileage-reward program in U.S. transportation today.

Why LA chose smartphone verification

Any mileage-reward program is only as credible as its verification. Self-report doesn't scale; OBD dongles are expensive and unpopular; cabin cameras are non-starters on privacy. Carma reads the odometer through connected-car APIs or an AI-reviewed photo, delivers privacy-by-design, and settles to a virtual card the same week the miles are driven. That's the architecture the program needs to grow.
